Rowan Cottage Full Details
An idyllic lochside cottage with stunning views to the Cairgorms
Rowan Cottage is a traditional stone cottage that has been extensively and sympathetically refurbished to provide the luxury of modern comforts but retaining the character of an early 1900s country dwelling.
The cottage is privately situated in its own enclosed grounds by the side of a small lake, called Avielochan with breathtaking views over Avielochan to the Cairngorm Mountains. The cottages is served by a private drive and there is ample parking for 6 cars.
You are greeted with the homely welcome of the traditional cottage front door, its porch adorned with fishing, walking and skiing knick-knacks synonymous with such a highland retreat. The quaint low ceilings of the entrance vestibule and period dining room, with its wooden beams, give a wonderfully warm ambience and a joyous reminder of the original cottage.
The dining room can comfortably seat 10 and is sumptuously decorated. There is an air of history in this room which fills you with imagery of clan or family gatherings where good times abounded. One can also imagine more intimate get-togethers but always with entertainment at their heart. A music system with iPod dock allows the mood music to be set for each occasion. The dining room opens on to a newly refitted kitchen and also leads through to the conservatory.
The conservatory is an oasis of light from sunrise to sunset, with the constant backdrop that is the view over the lochan to the Lairig Ghru Pass. This room is ideal for many purposes; breakfasting, reading, board games, getting ready for the spa/hot tub. You’ll be amazed at how often you will be drawn to this room, morning noon, and night.
At the opposite end of the ground floor is the lounge; a cosy snug of a place with a roaring log fire that creates a wonderful winter refuge from the elements especially on snowy and frosty days. With a wall mounted HD TV featuring full Sky package and blue ray DVD player it makes a great cinema room too! Just off the lounge is the family bathroom with a gorgeous slipper bath for easing away the pressures of the day!
Rowan Cottage offers variety and flexibility in sleeping accommodation all with remodeled interiors that beautifully set off the Bedrooms. On ground floor there is a twin bedroom with ensuite shower room. Upstairs there is a large, family, bedroom with a double and two single bed and ensuite shower room. There are two more double bedrooms upstairs at the front of the house. This was the original part of the cottage and both rooms have the period combed ceiling and quaint cottage windows. There is a shower room on the first floor between these bedrooms. All bedrooms are equipped with flat screen TVs with built in DVD and freeview. 2 Bedrooms are fitted with ipod docking stations
On the first floor landing there is also a study area should anyone require some quiet laptop time. Rowan Cottage has complimentary wi-fi internet connection (2.5GB weekly Data Limit-wireless PCs only) and this is available in most areas of the cottage. For our younger guests the cottage offers a cot and highchair. We have various toys and DVD's for your use and these are used at your own discretion.
Outside, Rowan Cottage has a large patio area that extends from the conservatory door where we have a luxury 8 person hot tub – simply luxuriate year round or soak the tired bones after your chosen activity. Either way you, and your friends, will be able to take in the beautiful Cairngorms, any season of the year. The patio is the ideal area for al fresco dining, Sundowner or that all important morning coffee, and if you want to chase the last rays of sun, as it dips over the Monadhliath Mountains, the french doors in the lounge open on to another patio area.
Rowan Cottage is equipped with an all new charming cottage style kitchen, which is large enough to prepare a full formal meal for all the family, or just a quick snack on the breakfast bar for two. The kitchen features a range cooker with ceramic hob, double oven and grill, integrated fridge, dishwasher and all the usual kitchen appliances. Rowan Cottage also has an adjoining utility room containg a washer and dryer and a large fridge freezer.
A short stroll around the lochan will acquaint you with the BWWC bird hide that has been newly sited on the far side. As you get your bearings you quickly appreciate that the lochan is surrounded by a working farm, which provides a “back to nature” backdrop to your stay. Children, both big and small, cannot help but watch on with wonder at the spring lambing. At the far end of the lochan, the track road rises over the main railway line and continues to farm buildings. From here it a beautiful and relatively undemanding forestry walk to Boat of Garten. Alternatively there is a route off this path to walk into Aviemore itself.
