Fishing on the River Spey and River Findhorn

The two main rivers near Aviemore are the River Spey and the River Findhorn. Both are prolific Salmon rivers and are world renowned for their salmon catches and consistency over the years.

The River Spey is widely considered to be the finest river in Scotland and is one of the most important and productive salmon rivers in the UK. Famous for its whisky and salmon fishing, the region supports a wide range of wildlife, including the ‘King of Fish’, the Atlantic Salmon.

Flowing from its source in the Monadhliath Mountains, through the Cairngorm National Park and out into the Moray Firth, for hundreds of years the Spey has captured the hearts and minds of people living and visiting Speyside. With a wealth of things to do, places to visit and a dram or two to sample, it’s easy to see why people fall in love with this special region of Scotland.

THE RIVER FINDHORN

The River Findhorn is one of the top ten salmon fishing rivers in Scotland. The river offers a variety of pools, and has a very steep gorge located in the centre of the river. Darnaway beat being one of the most famous for some big salmon. Smaller rods and more trout type tactics are often used to great success in catching salmon out of the gorges. Out of the gorge the river offers more of a traditional type of fishing.

The River Findhorn is one of the longest rivers in Scotland. Located in the north east, it flows into the Moray Firth on the north coast. It has one of the largest non-firth estuaries in Scotland. The river is about 62 miles long and the catchment area is 500 sq m. The River Findhorn rises in the Coignafearn Forest north of the main massif of the Monadhliath Mountains, several streams joining together near the Dalbeg bothy to form it.

TROUT FISHING

Trout fishing in the lochs and rivers can provide exciting sport and a fraction of the cost of Salmon fishing on the Spey and Findhorn.

If you have a group of novices or children, we would highly recommend Rothiemurchus Fishing which has a stocked loch and a smaller loch where kids can feed the fish and easily catch them with magots on a spinner or with the fly. They are predominantly rainbow trout.

The River Nethy has brown trout as does the River Druie which runs along the ski road behind Coylumbridge and Rothiemurchus. The River Feshie can also be good hunting ground but only when the water is of a certain height allowing the fish to run up stream.

There are numerous lochs that have a good stock of brown trout, namely Avie Lochan, Loch Pitoulish and Loch Garten. All of these can be fished by prior arrangement and details on trout fishing in the areas can be found on this excellent blog here
