Inverness is a city on Scotland’s northeast coast where the river Ness meets the Moray Firth. Inverness is the largest city and the cultural capital in the Scottish Highlands. Inverness was the happiest place to stay in 2014 and 2015. Inverness is only 29 miles from Aviemore.
Visit The Victorian Market and take in it’s atmosphere and discover interesting independent shops and cafés. Check out Leakey’s Bookshop which is a wonderful historic building with an amazing stock of books. Visit Inverness Castle dating from1836 and sitting on a cliff overlooking the river Ness, there have been castles on this site since 1057. The castle has 360-degree views of the Highland Capital.
FOOD AND NIGHTLIFE
From traditional Scottish music at Hootananny and great live bands at Johnny Foxes for dancing the night away Inverness has some amazing nightlife. Inverness also boasts some wonderful restaurants both local and chain here are some of our favourites Mustard Seed, Rocpool, Black Isle Bar, Cafe 1, Girvans and the River House.
TRANSPORT
The major A9 road passes right by Inverness and over the Kessock Bridge.The bus and rail stations are located right in the heart of the city. Inverness airport is located 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of the city and has regular bus connections, or choose one of the many great taxi companies to drop you off.
HISTORY
Inverness was first settled sometime before the 6th century BC and has hosted everything from Pictish kings and the real MacBeth to Mary Queen of Scots, Oliver Cromwell, not to mention the Jacobite risings, with the Battle of Culloden having been fought nearby.
CULTURE AND SPORTS
The main theatre, cinema and arts centre in Inverness is called Eden Court Theatre. Other venues in the city include Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and The Northern Meeting Park. Inverness is an important centre for bagpipe players and lovers as every September the city hosts the Northern Meeting. Inverness is also a hub for sports whether it be the football stadium (Caledonian Thistle Stadium), rugby, shinty, hockey or it’s spectacular golf courses. There’s something for everyone here!
